Space Opera: Saga (spoilers sorry :c )

Holy shit. Talk about a love story for the ages. First off I'll get this out of the way, the illustrations are gorgeous, Fiona Staples is truly a talented illustrator I highly recommend checking out her work. Second, the writing and plot are so good and using them in comic form does this world incredible justice. I read Saga, the first volume (issues 1-6) and they are GOOD. The comics mix the world of sci-fi and fantasy almost perfectly to the point where they seem like they're connected. the two opposing worlds Landfall and Wreath are so contrasting, they compliment each other.  Marko is probably my favorite of the two because he is such a dude-bro and who doesn't love a magic-wielding man with horns! Alana and Marko's love story is so out of place and weird I kinda love it? Imagine, falling in love with a person who hated your entire race and planet, AND meeting in prison AND falling for the guard that's in charge of you. (not really ideal in this reality but ...

I re-read Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix in my 20s.

Now, I wasn't huge into reading as a kid when the Harry Potter series came out. I would have much rather been drawing or watching cartoons. However, I have an older brother (about 4 years older than me) and he LOVED the books. Every book report or assigned summer reading he picked Harry Potter. So, naturally, I heard a lot about the books and they sounded cool, but my tiny 2nd-grade brain couldn't even FATHOM reading a thick monster that was' Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix'. My older brother being in 5th grade and excited about reading over the winter break decided he would be so kind and read the book aloud to my sister and me. To be honest, I didn't retain much information from him and his mumbling (before jaw surgery) made it hard to understand, plus the big words. I grew up, saw all the movies multiple times and even became a fan of the musical, decided I would finally truly read Harry Potter. Right off the bat, I noticed Harry was kind of arrogant ...

COVID-19 Vs. Zombies: A horror movie come true or a deadly virus with no happy ending.

COVID-19 (coronavirus) is one of the most lethal viruses to plague mankind in MASSIVE numbers since the Black Plague, with a devastating case number of 700,000 (as of March 29th), spanning over 6 continents, and killing 30% of those infected with it. Sound familiar? Well, it should. Since the birth of horror cinema, the undead (zombies) has been one of the most popular sub-genre, with a wide fan-based spanning from video games (Resident Evil), Television (The Walking Dead), and the big one, Movies (Zombieland, The Dead Don't Die, Train to Busan, 28 Days Later, etc.). Zombies have played an important role in 'Geek Culture' over the years, making a 'normal guy' into the main protagonist (Zombieland, Shaun of The Dead) geeks felt that (with enough preparation watching these movies) they could rule over the mass army of the undead instantly. With t-shirts, bumper stickers, online forums, roleplay, conventions, haunted house themes, and even shops, the zombie fan-base ...

ASIAN HORROR TIME!

Can we talk about Vampires? I'm gonna talk about Vampires.

Image
Vampires. Yes, the best horror/romance combination that was made for some reason? Being bitten and having to spend your eternal life with someone you don't know just because they changed you? Sounds romantic. Interview with a Vampire is the first of MANY to start this vampire romance sub-genre (surprisingly had a homosexual undertone as well as rising a child together, pretty progressive if you ask me). Vampires are unarguably the sexiest horror villain to drape the genre. With Vampire Diaries , True Blood , Bitten , Vampire Academy , and so many more, vampires are seen as pretty hot. The mystery and finding a 'mate' to turn and spend the rest of eternity with does sound cool and all, but I think people have forgotten the horrifying beginnings of vampires. Nosferatu. That man is terrifying, I do not trust him at all. But how did we get from him? to Edward Cullen? Easy. Add two lovers, create an internal struggle between them and add the spice that is one being an eternal ...

Witches? In my horror novel?

Black cats and pointy hats, the 'signature' witch vibe, or at least what most people think of witches. The archetype of witches has changed drastically over the course of many, many years. Witches went from women who would practice magic and dance naked in the woods to women who have magical powers but disguise themselves to appear normal (AHS Coven, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, etc.) Witches have become a staple to alternative culture, not just dark fashion and witchy aesthetics but the feminist attitude that witches portray. A popular feminist quote used is "We are the granddaughters of the witches you could not kill." which really empowers and stick with women, especially with mental illness or in alternative culture. Anyways, less formal analysis, men are afraid of women in power and decided to kill them as a response. The fact that strong women have to be portrayed in fantasy and horror as a mythical creature is just another misogynistic view as of women i...

Frankenstein: Personal thoughts and feelings.

Overall Vibe Honestly, Victor is a bad dad. Not in the fun sexy way of a guy whose mean to everyone but his child, no he IS mean to his child and pretty great to everyone else. Reading through letters and different submissions tells honest and truthful feelings towards the situations. Victor was a geek and wanted to create something through science and defying the laws of nature (making a dead guy alive again) which in itself sounds really cool, BUT Victor did it for selfish reasons. Once the Creature was alive and wasn't what victor expected he was upset and the creature leaves to find someone who WILL take care of him.  Not excusing the actions of the creature (ie. killing and hurting people victor loves and making threats to them) but I kind of understand why the creature would be upset with Victor. Asking Victor for someone who is like him doesn't seem that unreasonable, the creature feels alone and isolated because he is in a world where he is the only one of his kind...
